The world of sports has traditionally been dominated by football, baseball and other similar sports that have been around for years. One new and upcoming sport that has taken the world by an unexpected storm is Quidditch. A fantasy-based sport that originally started in the Harry Potter series written by J.K. Rowling has turned into an actual sport played by “muggles” or better known as “non-magical folk.” Something that originally was picked up in the U.S. but a group of college students, now has it’s own organization that is in charge of the rules, tournaments and other similar aspects of the game. This group is known as the International Quidditch Association. It has helped countries all over the world start their own teams and tournaments. This last summer – summer of 2012 - even hosted a Quidditch competition before the Olympics.
One of the many colleges that has started it’s own official Quidditch team is the University of Texas. It has an official varsity team that travels across the southern region the U.S. to compete to be selected to go the World Cup (hosted by the IQA) and have a chance to win. The players of the game join for reasons that range from simply enjoying the book and wanting the chance to live it to simply wanting a fun and new sport to compete in. It allows for a variety of people to join and become apart of a community that respects its members and wants to have a good time over all.
